Filing period opens for 5th District seat

The search for a new Mower County Commissioner has officially begun.
Today is the first day to file an affidavit of candidacy to run for the Mower County Commissioner’s 5th District seat.
Filing opened at 8 this morning. People interested in filling the vacancy can file an affidavit of candidacy at the Mower County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office in the Mower County Government Center. The filing period closes at 5 p.m. on Dec. 30.
The special election is scheduled for Feb. 10. If more than two candidates file an affidavit, a special primary will be held on Jan. 20.
Candidates need to be a resident of the 5th District for at least 30 days prior to the special election.
The seat, left vacant after the death of Commissioner David Tollefson, has to be filled between 30 and 90 days after the becomes vacant, which would be between about Jan. 4 and March 4.
