The Austin Symphony Orchestra and Chorus perform a Christmas Concert next weekend.

The “Christmas Magic” concert is Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Knowlton Auditorium at Austin High School.

Audience members can join the chorus in singing “Joy to the World,” “Away in a Manger” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” They can also tap their toes to “Sleigh Ride” and Victor Herbert’s “March of the Toys.” The Symphony also plays the classic Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

The chorus sings Bach’s “Magnificat” as well. Soloists include: Pam Koser, soprano; Anne Walker, mezzo soprano; Becky Ogilvie, alto; Scott Blankenbaker, tenor; and Neal Erickson, bass.

The Bach “Magnificat” was written in 1723 and has deep meaning for Christians because the text is the canticle of Mary found in the Gospel of Luke. This is one of only two major works in which Bach uses Latin, not his native German.

The chorus will be on stage for the entire concert to join in singing all the sing-alongs.

“This is a talented choir full of wonderful singers who meet the challenges and agility requirements of this music. And this quality entertainment is a great value for families,” said chorusmaster Sonia Larson in a press release.

Tickets are $10 for adults or $8 in advance at HyVee. The concert is free for students in grades K-12.
