Sartell/Sauk Rapids starts fast against Austin girls hockey team

The Austin girls hockey team couldn’t keep up with Sartell/Sauk Rapids in a 5-2 loss in the St. Cloud Tournament Friday.
The Packers (2-3-1 overall) allowed a goal off the opening toss, when Nina Jacobson scored a transition goal 14 seconds into the game. Jacobson scored another first period goal to put Sartell (3-1 overall) up 2-0 and Austin (2-3-1 overall) fell behind 4-0 before it scored.
“We started off slow and Sartell is a fast team,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “They were beating us to the puck early on.”
Kirsten Stanek scored in the second period to make it 4-1 and Carley Grunewald scored in the third period to make it 4-2.
Audrey DeVries had 25 saves for Austin, which had 33 shots on goal.
The Packers will play St. Cloud Tech Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in St. Cloud.
