Rachel Murphy

Rachel Irene Murphy, 95, formerly of Austin, and Rio Rancho, N.M. died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minn.

She was born Feb. 18, 1914 in Minot, N.D. to Samuel and Marie (Berge) Hanson. In 1918 she went to live with her Aunt in Austin after her mother had passed away. She graduated from Austin High School in 1931. In 1935 she married Marion J. Murphy (MJ). Together they owned and operated Murphy Oil Co. in Austin for 35 years  until 1970 when they moved to Rio Rancho, N.M. Marion died in 2002 and in 2004 Rachel moved with her daughter to Rochester. In 2005, after having a stroke, she moved to Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.

Rachel was always very active in her children’s lives. When they were young, she was involved in Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. She loved to play bridge and was active member of the D.P.O.E. Does.
She is survived by her daughter, Jana Edwards, Rochester, Minn.; son, Jack Murphy, Austin; grandchildren, Karianne (Jake) Johnson, Clarion, Iowa, Chad (Nicole) Schoenfelder, Rochester, Minn.; six great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marion; son James Murphy; one brother; and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary Chapel in Austin with the Rev. Carol Shaffer officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary for one hour before the service. Interment will be in the Grandview Cemetery.

Casket Bearers will be Chad Schoenfelder, Bob Hanson, David Hanson, Larry Murphy, Rick Murphy, and Connor Johnson.
