Blossoms ready for familiar opponent

The Awesome Blossoms are looking at their biggest contest of the season as just another game as they prepare for the Section 1A football title game for the third straight season when they host Goodhue (7-3 overall) Friday at 7 p.m.

“Being at home is going to help us,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “We’re stressing to the players that it’s just another Friday night football game.”

The top-seeded Blossoms (9-1 overall) have won nine straight and have won their last seven contests by at least 20 points, but the Wildcats should pose a strong threat as they are one of the fastest teams BP will face so far this season.

“They remind me a lot of Medford,” Gimbel said. “They’ve got quick and fast corners that fly to the ball.”

The Blossoms will battle No. 2 seeded Goodhue’s speed with their size. BP has gotten a huge lift from its offensive line this season as sophomore quarterback Luc Zellmer has had plenty of time to throw and senior running back Aaron Niles has had some nice holes to run through.

The offensive line is all seniors and the starters are Aaron Krejci, Dan Willert, Brad Wocelka, Pat Trotman, and Zach Herdina.

“I like our size against them, but we’ll have to get used to their speed,” Gimbel said. “I don’t know if we’ve seen the speed they have across the board. On defense, we’ll have to keep everything in front of us.”

BP has played Goodhue in the last two postseasons — beating them last year and losing to them two years ago when the Wildcats won state — but this meeting could be a completely different kind of game altogether.

“Every team is a little different each year and I don’t think we have to change much of what we’ve done all year,” Gimbel said. “We’re different from past years already.”

Gimbel said there should be nerves in a game of this magnitude for the Blossoms, but he’s hoping to keep the kids down to Earth.

“The biggest thing us coaches have learned in the past couple of years is to make it a lot easier on the team and to run more of a regular practice schedule,” Gimbel said.

BP beat Fillmore Central 35-13 last week, while Goodhue beat Rushford/Peterson 21-7 last week.

The winner of the Goodhue and BP game will play in the Class ‘A’ state quarterfinals at RCTC Stadium in Rochester the following Saturday.
