The Austin boys soccer team was shorthanded, but it didn’t show on the scoreboard as they fought hard in a 1-0 loss at Mankato West Friday.

The Packers only suited up six varsity players, as many were out with Homecoming commitments, and nine JV players took the field.

Austin (10-4 overall, 6-4 Big Nine) allowed an early goal and played even the rest of the way with the Scarlets (13-2 overall).

Austin attempted 10 shots on goal, while Mankato West fired 12 shots. Ryan Rasell had 11 saves for the Packers.

“We moved the ball well and the defense stepped up,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “Even though this year isn’t done yet, it showed us what we’ll see next year.”

Stepping up for Austin’s JV were: Jake Hagen-Erickson, Zach Vierkandt, Aaron Mehus, Andrew Striker, Noe Garcia-Marquez, Tyler Stevens, Nick Hagen-Erickson and Fernando Garcia.
