The Southland volleyball team topped the Minnesota State Academy of the Deaf 25-17, 25-13, 25-7 in a first round Section 1A West tournament match Monday in Adams.

“The girls worked on their hitting tonight,” Southland head coach Angie Smith said. “We hit the ball hard and it was fun to watch.”

The fifth-seeded Rebels (10-12 overall) will now play at No. 4 Kenyon/Wanamingo Thursday at 7 p.m.

Southland was led by Katie Barthel, who had 11 kills and 11 assists, Brandi Schammel had seven kills and two ace blocks, Jenna Juenger had six kills, Jana Schammel had four kills and three ace serves, and Emily Howton had 12 digs and six ace serves.
