The Pacelli girls tennis team beat Shattuck-St. Mary’s 5-2 in the first round of the Section 1A playoffs Tuesday in Owatonna.

The eighth-seeded Shamrocks got singles wins from Lisa Johnen (6-0, 6,0) at No. 1, Lauren Rieker (6-1, 6-0) at No. 2 and Abby Leif (6-0, 6-0 at No. 3).

Pacelli was without No. 4 singles player Steph Kocer, but their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams picked up wins.

“Shattuck stacked their doubles teams in an effort to strengthen their lineup,” Pacelli head coach Mark Henderson said. “We took advantage of that on the singles side, and our doubles teams overcame the challenge. I thought we showed some of our best mental toughness of the season, and that’s all you can ask for at tournament time.””

Pacelli will travel to Rochester Lourdes Wednesday for a matchup with the No. 1 team in Section 1A, that has won 11 of the 12 past team state titles in Class ‘A.’ They will play 4 p.m. at Rochester Tennis center.
