Julia Slegh

Julia Mae (Babey) Slegh, 83, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009 in her home.

Julia was born Jan. 20, 1926 to John and Anna (Marrinak) Babey in Lakefield, Minn. She was baptized in Lakefield and moved with her family to Hollandale in 1927. Julia was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She attended elementary school in Maple Island and Hollandale and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1943. Julia worked as the secretary for the Maple Island Farm Co. for three years and also helped with typing for Tennis VanWilgen Sr., manager of the Hollandale Employment Office and was the bookkeeper for Hollandale Marketing Association for three years. Later she worked for 15 seasons at the Marketing Association in quality control.

On Aug. 1, 1948 Julia was united in marriage to Cornelius Slegh at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Arthur Schultz. The couple made their home in the Hollandale area and Julia was a very active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and past treasurer and secretary for Women in Christ. She was also a member of the VFW auxiliary and the Maple Island Happy Hour Club. Julia enjoyed being a homemaker and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

Survivors include her children, Daryl (Judy) Slegh, Patsy Slegh, and Robert (Kathy) Slegh; daughter-in-law, Judith Slegh; grandchildren, Tim, Jason (Jill), David (Rachel), Dan, Matthew, Sarah, Eric and Allison DenHerder and Amanda Slegh; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Mikayla, Aubri, Rylie and Hunter; sisters, Leona Taylor, Alice Fuhr, and Irene Wagner; sister-in-law, Lorraine Babey; brother-in-law, Dick Slegh; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Babey; in-laws, Peter and Cora Slegh; husband, Cornelius Slegh; son, Gary Slegh; brothers, John and Robert; sister, Evelyn; and brother-in-law, John Slegh.

Funeral services for Julia Mae Slegh will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hollandale with the Rev. Jeffrey Kuddes officiating. Interment will be at the Hollandale Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
