Hayfield knocked off Blooming Prairie in a Subsection 1A volleyball tournament match at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester Saturday.

“Our passers did a great job tonight, that gave our setter some good options,” Hayfield head coach Deb Harvey said. “Our hitters were getting good swings but Blooming Prairie played really good defense. They made it really difficult to find the floor.”

The two-seeded Vikings (19-9 overall) will play top seeded Faribault Bethlehem Academy (25-3 overall) at Mayo Civic Center Wednesday at 6 p.m.

In the end, Hayfield just had a few more attacks in the fifth game to pull away.

“They threaded some nice outside shots down the line that we just couldn’t handle,” BP head coach Gina McLaughlin said. “On top of that, we didn’t pass strong enough at the end of the match to answer with hits of our own.”

The No. 6 seeded Awesome Blossoms (12-17 overall) pulled of quite an achievement to win two playoff matches.

“This team is hands down the most improved group of girls I have ever worked with,” McLaughlin said. “If you would have asked me mid-September if I thought we would have

earned a trip to the Mayo Civic and push the two seeded team to a five game match. I would have thought it would take a miracle. Well, this team has been the best surprise. Their

hard work, team chemistry, and determination have ‘wowed’ me.”

Hayfield was led by Kiley Severson, who had 14 kills, four blocks, two aces and 10 digs, Abby Blanchard had 13 kills and 14 digs, Molly Streightiff had 35 assists, two aces, four kills, five blocks, Liz Ristau had seven kills and six blocks, and Alyssa Selk had 19 digs.

Whitney Burt had 11 kills and four blocks for BP, Marie Morem had nine kills, six blocks and 10 digs, Jordan Noble had 39 assists and 15 digs, Kristin Hagan had seven kills, seven blocks, and 14 digs, Yasmine Smith had five kills, Trisha Roeker had 20 digs and seven kills, Erin Johnson had 10 digs and Janelle Morem had 10 digs.
