An Austin woman faces a felony charge for allegedly using bad checks to buy jewelry, which she later tried to pawn.
April Amanda Mallan, 29, appeared in court Friday on the one count. She is scheduled for arraignment Nov. 5.
According to a court complaint, Mallan used two checks to buy a ring, earrings and a watch at Bendixen Jewelry on Main Street Wednesday.
The merchandise totaled almost $800.
The checks were in the name of and signed by Joseph Mallan, April’s husband, but she filled them out and gave them to the clerk.
A day later, a store representative reported to police that the checks were no good.
The complaint states that Joseph Mallan opened an account with Guaranty Bank on Aug. 21 with a $95 deposit.
Records show that the $95 was withdrawn a day later and that no other deposits were made into the account.
To date, roughly $900 worth of outstanding checks are linked to the account.
April Mallan was arrested Thursday while attempting to sell the jewelry at a pawn shop.
She admitted to police that she knew the checks were no good and that buying the jewelry was a “stupid” idea, according to the complaint.
