Austin takes sixth at swimming invite

At the Austin Invitational Saturday, the Austin High School swimming and diving team competed its way to a sixth-place finish in the nine-team field.

Rochester John Marshall led all teams with 531 points, followed by Rochester Century, 322.5; Rochester Mayo 235; Sauk Rapids – Rice 196; Owatonna; 193 and Austin, 156.5.

Mankato West came in seventh place with 148.5 points, while Albert Lea finished in eighth with 137.5 points and Minneapolis South placed ninth with 95.

In the girls 200-yard medley relay, Austin’s Lindsey Halsey, Kelli Bednar, Averi Splinter and Lauren Edwards placed fifth with a finals time of 2:01.63.

In other events, top-10 finishes for Austin included Sela Fadness’ third place in girls 1 meter diving with 345.15 points; Splinter’s sixth-place in girls 50-yard freestyle (26.76 finals time); Nicole Haugland’s seventh-place in girls 50-yard freestyle (26.85); Splinter’s seventh-place in the girls 100-yard butterfly (1:05.28); Bednar’s sixth place in the girls 100-yard breaststroke (1.15.66); and the sixth place 200-yard freestyle relay team, made up of Splinter, Bednar, Haugland and Edwards (1:49.16).
