Arnold William Georg, age 94 of Austin, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 at Our House Senior Living in Austin.

Arnold was born Oct. 1, 1915 to Daniel August and Josephine Caroline (Hammerle) Georg in Knierim, Greenfield Township, Calhoun County, Iowa. Arnold was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran church near Knierim. He attended grade school in Knierim, graduated with honors from Manson High School, Manson, Iowa in 1933 and from Fort Dodge Business College, Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 1935. In high school he was a member of a baseball team that won the state championship.

After graduation, Arnold worked as a bookkeeper at Fullerton Lumber in Fort Dodge and Carstens Brothers in Ankley, Iowa. Beginning in 1937 he worked as a teletype operator at the Hormel office in Austin and as a timekeeper for the guard force. On Jan. 22, 1939 Arnold married Sylvia Anna Emma Schlichting at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, rural Waltham.

On Feb. 1, 1939 he worked as a senior typist with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. From January to June in 1940 he worked as a stenographer in the REA office. On July 1 1940 he began work as a warden’s secretary at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, and continued to work for the Federal Prison System until his retirement. During his career Arnold lived in Washington, D.C. and in eight other states. After retiring on Aug. 31, 1967 they lived in Austin and Brownsdale. They spent many winters in Weslaco, Texas. After retiring Arnold obtained a real estate sales license and worked for Streeters Store Fixtures in Albert Lea for a number of years. After moving to Brownsdale Arnold became a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brownsdale. Over the years he attended Lutheran churches where he was living and served as a church secretary and church treasurer in various churches. He was an avid dominos and shuffleboard player and a highly regarded bridge player. Arnold and Sylvia moved to Our House Senior Living in July, 2007. Sylvia passed away on December 11 that year.

Survivors include his son, Daniel Eric Georg of Allen, Texas; three grandchildren; Angie Sue (Robert) Hill, Sheldon, Texas, Daniel Eric Jr. (Haley) Georg, Allen, Texas, Christine Ann Georg, Allen, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Jennifer Hill, Jessica Hill, Rob Hill, Madelyn Hill, all of Allen, Texas; daughter-in-law, Deborah Ann Georg, Allen, Texas; sister, Donna (Stanley) Erickson, Marathon, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mertie Georg, Algona, Iowa; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia; sisters, Dorothy Rude and Leona Johnson; and brothers, Alvin Georg and Ernest Georg.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brownsdale with Pastor Jeffrey Sage officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery near Waltham. Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.
