Shirley Mae Gilma Aldahl, age 80 of Austin, Minn. died Friday afternoon, Sept. 25, 2009, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home. She was born May 14, 1929, in Austin, the daughter of George Oscar and Sylvia (Aldal) Aldahl. Following her mother’s death, Shirley was raised by her aunt, Nellie Thompson, from the age of nine. She attended school in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1947. After graduation, Shirley began working for the Geo. A. Hormel Company, a position she held until her retirement in the early 1980s. She enjoyed bus trips to many places, playing cards, especially cribbage and her trips to the casino with family and friends. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Eagles, where she was a volunteer on hamburger night, Moose Lodge and the American Legion. After her retirement, Shirley worked part-time for the Mower County Shopper, placing inserts in the shopper.
Survivors include a nephew, George Aldahl of Northfield; a niece, Marsha (Rick) Retterath of St. Joseph; two great nephews, Peter and Tim Aldahl of Northfield; many cousins and friends including special friends, Alta Gaines and Lois Schmidt
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery in rural Austin. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. An Eagles Auxiliary Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28th at Worlein Funeral Home. Memorials are preferred to the cancer research of the donor’s choice.
