George Walter Hemmingsen (Wally), 93, of Hayfield, formerly of Austin, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009 at the Field CrestCare Center, Hayfield.
George was born July 11, 1916 in Walnut Grove, Minn. to Alfred and Nicolena (Hansen) Hemmingsen. Wally moved to Austin in 1930 and graduated from Austin High School in 1935. In 1938 he was married to Lois Mestad. Wally lived in Austin until 2004, when he moved to the Field Crest Care Center.  He worked as a meat cutter at Hormel Foods and retired in 1975.
George is survived by his sister, Lil Dugan, Pharr, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Mary Hemmingsen, Clear Water, Fla.; nieces and nephews.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois in 1992; and a sister, Elsie Culton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 at Clasen-Jordan Chapel with Todd Portinga, AiM officiating.  Friends may greet the family from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Memorials are preferred to the Mower County Humane Society.
