Athletics hold on to beat Cards

The Lyle/Pacelli football team notched its first win of the season with a 6-2 win over LeRoy/Ostrander at Art Hass Stadium Friday.
The Athletics (1-1 overall, 1-1 SEC) closed out the game by accepting a safety when punter Michael Lonergan ran out of his own end zone to run off the last eight seconds of the game.
“It was good to get a win, our defense answered every call tonight,” L/P head coach Mark Buntje said.
The Cardinals (0-2 overall, 0-2 SEC) had two posessions deep in L/P territory at the end of the game, but couldn’t score.
“We ran the ball well between the twenties, then we’d have a big fumble or a big penalty,” L/O head coach Aaron Hungerholt said. “It was one big mental mistake after the next.”
After L/P botched a snap on a fourth and one from it’s own 26-yard line, the Athletics stopped the Cardinals on downs. On fourth and two from the L/P 18-yard line, they stuffed L/O’s Brennen Mensink for a loss.
The Cards drove deep in to L/P territory on their previous posession, but Carter Guthmiller picked off a pass at the one-yard line with 4:37 left in the game to keep the Cards out of the end zone.
“I was kind of sitting back in the zone trying to read the quarterback,” Guthmiller said. “He started to look at the tight end, and I just jumped in front of it and it fell right in my hands.”
The Athletics took the lead in the first quarter when running back Kyle Pereault busted off a 49-yard run and followed it up with a three-yard scoring plunge. Pereault finished with 97 yards on the ground.
“Kyle was a nice find for us tonight and we need a running back,” Buntje said. “He ran the ball well and he might have been the difference in the game.”
Guthmiller was 7-for-19 with 70 yards at quarterback for L/P.
“We played ugly, but we made the plays we needed to,” Guthmiller said.
