The Austin High School boys soccer team is 1-0 following its 7-0 victory at Plainview Friday night.
Playing against Plainview/Elgin/Millville, the Packers scored three goals in the first half and added four more in the second.
“It had been a few years since we had played Plainview, but we knew they were improved,” said Austin coach Jens Levisen. “We knew we had to come out and play strong.
They did.
The Packers took a 1-0 lead on senior Jacob Brehmer’s goal in the 24th minute on an assist by freshman Francisco Torres.
Senior Alex Klock added the second goal at the 27th minute after a cross by Torres, while junior Pedro Herrera chipped the ball over the keeper in the 39th minute after an assist from Brehmer.
“It’s a nice thing to have many people who can score goals,” Levisen said. “Some teams rely on one or two guys, and if the ball doesn’t go through those guys they don’t score that game. We have several guys who can score up front, so it’s definitely something we have in our favor.”
The second half was more of the same.
Freshman Jake Hagen-Erickson scored in the 56th minute on a penalty kick, and senior Martin Manocchio followed that up with a goal in the 61st minute on an assist from senior Jordan Broers.
Senior Jacob Larson scored on a corner kick from senior Will Darling in the 77th minute, and Brehmer added the final goal at the 79th minute on a 20-yard chip over the keeper.
The Packers next host Owatonna Tuesday.
“That will be a good test,” Levisen said. “We know we’ll bring our best game because we know they will bring their best game.”
Owatonna beat Austin in the teams’ only meeting last year.
