It has arrived. The 125th annual Mower County Fair kicks off today with a noon grand opening and runs through Aug. 16.

It’s six days filled with food, games, rides and exhibits, and a return of the worlds of demolition derby, tractor pull and Xtreme Bullriding.

Despite a short downpour of rain Monday, exhibitors, vendors and carnival crews were hard at work, making last-minute adjustments for a week that weather forecasters expect to be hot.

DeAnna Hagy, who owns three food stands at the fair this year, including a steak on a stick stand, one for pitas and one for desserts, was finalizing her menu.

“We have five kids so we have to keep them busy,” the DeLand, Fla. resident said.

“They have to make money for college.”

Hagy’s stands offer everything from apple dumplings, brownie sundaes, turkey legs and ribbon fries, which Hagy said are different than the curly variety.

“A ribbon fry is similar to a potato chip,” she said. “We load ours up with cheese, bacon and sour cream, so it’s a whole meal in itself.”

Fair board director Bruce Whiteaker said there are more than 100 vendors at this year’s fair, located both indoors and outdoors, as well as something for everyone, including an Eagle Show Wednesday afternoon, a 1,200-pound boar named Reggie and an Elvis impersonator Tuesday night.

“It’s kind of like a family reunion,” he said. “People come for the conversations. They come for the food, and they come for the camaraderie.

Hagy agreed.

“We enjoy it; the people here are just great,” she said. “We love coming to this fair. We have customers who every year send us Christmas cards. It’s like coming to visit family.”

And it all starts today.
