Anakin is still a good rabbit

Today wraps up the 125th Mower County Fair — the demolition derbies, the funnel cakes, the rides and the games.

In honor of all of that, I naturally decided to write today’s column about the fair.

My problem at first was finding the right subject matter.

I could write about DeAnna Hagy from DeLand, Fla., whose three food booths help her family pay their bills and provide her children money for college.

I had already done that Tuesday though.

I could write about David “Cannonball” Smith, the world record holder who twice nightly this week rocketed out of a cannon over one of the ferris wheels.

But I did that Thursday.

I then had this idea about taking $20 and heading to the games in quest of winning a stuffed animal or other prize for my girlfriend.

I decided instead to save the $20 and later bought her a bottle of wine.

I could go on the rides, I thought, but I got sick once when I was 15 and didn’t want to relive the experience.

So instead, I stopped into Katelyn and Devyn’s lemonade stand for a cold drink to think about other column ideas.

After that, I headed for the animals.

There I found Joshua Hill walking his pet rabbit “Anakin.”

Joshua named his pet after, of course, Anakin Skywalker of the Star Wars movies.

Joshua said he chose the name “Anakin” over the evil Darth Vader, which of course is what Anakin becomes, because his rabbit is a good rabbit.

The Austin 4-H member recently won several ribbons for “Anakin” and was walking the Mini Rex breed rabbit on a leash as if it were a puppy.

He stopped long enough, though, to answer a few questions about what it takes to care for a prize-winning rabbit.

“It’s not hard actually,” he said, while keeping a close eye on “Anakin.” “You just have to take him for a run every day and give him water and food.”

“Which is more important, water or food?” his mother, Kim Hill then asked.

“Why, they’re both important,” he said, without missing a beat.

Kim Hill said they purchased “Anakin” in March at a rabbit show the Cedar River Rabbit Club was hosting at the Oak Park Mall. “Anakin” was in a cage that was marked with a for sale sign on it, but at the time the Hills came by, the owner was busy showing other animals.

But Joshua wanted that rabbit, and the waiting began.

“It’s hard to get a 9-year-old to sit still for anything, but he sat still for four hours in front of that cage,” Kim Hill said.

The rest is history.

Rabbits are now a common trend in the Hill family.

Kim Hill’s daughter, Beth Hill, 12, won some ribbons for her Netherland Dwarf rabbit named “Peanut.”

Her favorite part about rabbits, Beth said, is their noses.

“They’re funny,” she said. “They never stop moving.”

I congratulated both Beth and Joshua on their winnings and headed back out to the food stands.

Dinner was just around the corner.
