Melvin Harpuder

Melvin “Mel” B. Harpuder, 90
Melvin Bernard Harpuder was born on June 1, 1919 in Middleport, N.Y. to Rudolph and Harriet Harpuder. He graduated from Middleport High School. During that time, he helped out at the family business. Harpuder’s Clothing store. He also attended Ithaca College. Mel was a gifted athlete, especially in Baseball. He went on to realize his dream of becoming a professional baseball player. After three years of service in the U.S. Army, he then signed with the New York Giants baseball system, starting in Jersey City, N.J. He then went on to play for the Minneapolis Millers. After that, he played for Austin and Albert Lea in the Southern Minny League.
Mel, a longtime resident of Austin, retired from Hormel after 33 years. He spent over 20 years of his retirement in Yuma, Ariz. Mel and Dody recently moved to the Kasson area to be near family. He was a member of the Community Celebration Church in Kasson and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris; son, Craig Harpuder, Austin; daughters, Vicki Bennerotte, Plymouth, Brenda (Claude) Schuhwerck, Oakdale; Pastor Susan (Jeff) Iverson, Mantorville; four grandchildren and two nieces.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Visitation will be on July 8, at Community Celebration Church in Kasson from 5 to 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be at the church on July 9, at 11 a.m. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Dibble Funeral Home in Kasson is in charge of arrangements.
