The Austin Greyhounds won two out of three games at the Nick Bell amateur baseball Classic in Cold Spring this past weekend.
On Saturday Austin beat Brainerd 6-3 and lost to Cold Spring 5-0. On Sunday, the Hounds bested Sauk Rapids 3-1.
Sunday’s win was highlighted by a two-out, two-run double by Craig Braaten to put Austin (10-13 overall) up 2-1 in the fifth. Braaten was down 0-2 on the count, but a lifted a pitch to deep right-center to put the Hounds up for good.
“They kind of had him against the wall, but Craig came through with a clutch hit,” Austin manager John Frein said.
Austin’s Alex Kasak got the win against Sauk Rapids as he didn’t allow a walk while giving up nine hits in seven innings. He shook off an early hit to the shin on a ground ball to pitch the victory.
“We told him he couldn’t be hurt, he had to stay out there,” Frein said.
In the lost to the Springers, Dave Meyer made his first start for the Hounds since hurting his hand against the Royals July 10. Meyer went all seven, but allowed five runs in the fifth inning.
Cold Spring’s Chris Balla pitched a two-hit shutout, while walking just two.
“We didn’t have a lot of chances,” Frein said.
Pete Korfage picked up the win against Brainerd as he struck out five, while allowing six hits and three earned runs. Korfage recovered from a slow start that saw the Bees score twice in the first inning.
“After that he settled down and cruised most of the way,” Frein said.
The Hounds will host Albert Lea Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
