More than 160 runners participated in the 27th 5-Mile Hog Jog Saturday morning at East Side Lake in Austin.

The event is organized by the YMCA in conjunction with Freedom Fest activities.

There were a total of 156 finishers.

Hog Jog registration was up this year, although same-day registration was lower, possibly attributed to the rainy weather, said Mark Bjorlie, YMCA director. Bjorlie said 146 people participated last year.

The USATF-sanctioned course started east on Oakland Place Northeast, next to East Side Lake, and traveled along 14th Street Northeast, circled Todd Park, and finished at the starting location.

Bjorlie said that although Todd Park has been closed to visitors because of tornado damage, Austin Park and Rec allowed them to use the same course for the race.

Trophies were awarded to first place overall male and female finishers.

Plaques were awarded for first places and medals were given for second and third to males and females in each age division.

Age categories were 15 and under, 16-23, 24-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64 and 65 and over.

The race, described as flat and fast, uses chip timing.

Joel Francis was the top overall winner with a time of 28:40, while Gretchen Sodaka was the top female with a time of 33:25.
