Greyhounds beat Blues 10-8

It wasn’t their most dominating performance, but the Greyhounds did enough things right to walk away with a 10-8 win over the Rochester Blues in an amateur baseball game at Marcusen Park Tuesday.

The Blues put the pressure on Austin in the eighth when Hayfield graduate Darin Wagner drilled a line drive home run over the left field fence to score three and make it a 9-7 Hounds lead.

The Hounds got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Nick Rohne knocked in Joel Swatfager. Austin relief pitcher John Kirby came in to get the last out after Rochester scored to make it 10-8 in the ninth on an RBI-triple by Brian Ness.

Kirby, who faced just one hitter, was one of four pitchers to take the mound for Austin.

Swatfager, who batted lead-off went three-for-five with two runs, and Austin’s top three hitters combined for eight of the Greyhounds’ 12 hits.

“I don’t like lead-off, but I enjoyed it tonight, because if I didn’t do it (Rohne and Matt Cano) would,” Swatfager, who is used to hitting with a metal bat in Legion games, said. “You’ve got to hit it on the barrel with a wood bat. Two of my hits weren’t real legit hits, but I was surprised (with my success).”

John Halverson picked up the win as he struck out seven and allowed three earned runs in five and one-third innings.

“It’s a lot easier to pitch when you’re ahead. It makes a difference,” Halverson said.

Zach Schara pitched the first two innings and struck out four while allowing no hits. It was his first action in a year and a half.

“Zach’s just trying to get in shape,” Austin manager John Frein said. “He brings a lot of excitement to the field and the dugout. He helps put us over the edge.”

The Hounds (6-11 overall) did most of their damage early as they scored four times in the second and three times in the fifth. In the second, the Hounds got four two-out hits, including a two-run single by Cano to right field and a bloop RBI single by Craig Braaten to center.

In the fifth, Dan Zielke knocked in a run with a two-out single to right field and two more Austin runs scored when the Blues (6-12 overall) dropped a fly ball off the bat of Nick Bowe.

“We squeaked some hits in there,” Frein said. “We haven’t really been dynamite at the plate this year.”

The Hounds will host the Rochester Royals in a big Section 2B game Friday at 8 p.m.
