EDITORIAL: It’s a victory for Minnesota

It’s about time. On Tuesday, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that Democrat Al Franken should be certified the winner in Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race that has continued since election night last November.

In the end, Franken won by 312 votes out of nearly 2.9 million cast and could be seated as early as next week after Republican incumbent Norm Coleman conceded the election.

The supreme court declared Franken the winner, but the bigger winners in our book are the constituents of Minnesota, who will now have two U.S. senators representing them in Washington.

Franken will join fellow-Democrat U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who congratulated Franken on his victory.

“I congratulate Al Franken on a hard-earned and long-awaited victory,” she said in a statement. “I welcome him as my new senate colleague from Minnesota.”

The win will also take the added pressure off our legislators, many who fielded extra calls the past seven months while there was only one U.S. senator representing our state.

We congratulate Franken, thank Coleman for his contributions in the senate and like so many of Minnesota’s constituents, we are now ready to move on.

Tuesday was a win for Al Franken, but it was also a victory for Minnesota.
