It’s still early in the race for Minnesota’s next governor, but Mower County residents can get a first-hand look at some of the 2010 candidates this weekend.

The first ever Politics in the Pumpkin Patch event will be held Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Farmer John’s Pumpkin Patch, 90537 273rd St. in rural Austin.

Ten DFL candidates will speak for about 10 to 15 minutes each, giving voters an idea into what each one stands for.

The cost is $10, which includes dinner and music.

In addition to the candidates, Rep. Robin Brown (DFL-Albert Lea), Rep. Jeanne Poppe (DFL-Austin) and fellow DLFer District 27 Sen. Dan Sparks will also be in attendance.

The event is the brainchild of Brown and her husband, Joseph Brown, superintendent of the Grand Meadow Independent School District, and provides a chance for southern Minnesota residents to ask questions to these governor hopefuls.

The best voter is an informed voter, and Saturday is a good place to start.

We encourage local residents to attend, and we hope area Republicans will plan a similar event in the future.
