EDITORIAL: Austin School Board race offers options

The deadline to file for three open seats on the Austin School Board came and went this week, with eight candidates opting to run, including the incumbents.
School board members Richard Lees, Mary Kleis and David Simonson will all be on the ballot again this year, as will newcomers Tracey Chamberlain, Aaron DeVries, Aaron Keenan, Jeff Kritzer and Jeff Ollman.
As reported by Herald news editor Katie Johnson Wednesday, a primary election will be held Sept. 15 because three or more candidates have filed for a position. The general election for the three-year terms will be held Nov. 3.
This election will be an important one as schools throughout the state continue to face possible funding reductions in the weakened economy. We need strong board members who understand our local schools and the needs of our students and administrations.
We’re pleased to know that eight candidates filed for the upcoming election, because having a good mix of both incumbents and newcomers provides our residents with options.
We encourage voters to get to know these candidates as we will do the same.
We’ll then name our endorsements later on this year.
