County discusses trail plans

A Rose Creek man told the Mower County board on Tuesday that any plans to build the Shooting Star bike trail through his yard would be strongly opposed.

Lynn Loots, who lives on Fourth Street, said when he heard that the Rose Creek City Council had discussed the option of expanding the trail through his yard, he decided to bring his concerns to those ultimately responsible for approving trail plans — the Mower County Board of Commissioners.

Loots presented a number of pictures to the board of his property and the existing trail, and asked that they consider other alternatives for expansion.

“I just wanted to bring it up,” Loots said, who added that he had 30 lilacs, two apple trees and two evergreens that could be affected if a path paved through.

However, county officials told Loots that any plans for the trail in Rose Creek are preliminary at best.

“Nothing has been cast in stone,” county engineer Michael Hanson said.

Hanson said the idea of going through properties has come up, but so has a number of other proposals.

“This was an option,” he said. “(It) may not be the best option.”

County coordinator Craig Oscarson said it was good to hear concerns now, but like Hanson, said plans through Rose Creek are in the early phases.

Oscarson added that beyond just figuring out how the path should go through Rose Creek, officials need to spend more time planning the rest of the route, which has been targeted to end in Austin.

The Shooting Star State Trail currently starts in LeRoy and winds its way through Taopi and Adams.
