An illuminated crucifix, line dancing and paving over a cemetery … fans of the musical series “Nunsense” can expect nothing short of mayhem and hilarity in the third installment to debut this week from Summerset Theatre.

“Sister Amnesia’s Country Western Nunsense Jamboree” returns to the story of Sister Amnesia, a nun who promotes her new country-western album, a dream realized when regaining her memory after an incident with a falling crucifix. Sister Amnesia is joined by Sister Robert Anne, Sister Mary Leo and Sister Mary Wilhelm, along with country radio show host Father Virgil Trott.

Summerset’s production brings back four original cast members from the first two musicals, performed in 1990 and 1992. Coni Nelson, Penny Kinney, Cece Kroc and Jan Thomas have returned for the newest “Nunsense.”

“At a 40th reunion of Summerset, we were all talking about ‘Nunsense,’” Thomas explained. The women decided to regroup; coincidentally, a fifth nun from the first two productions was not included in the latest cast, and that actress has moved away.

“It’s the only script that doesn’t have the ‘Reverend Mother’ in it,” Kinney said.

“I wouldn’t have come back had they not pulled us back together,” Kroc said.

Three of the actresses are Catholic, and have fond memories of their Catholic school upbringing.

“We’re kind of nostalgic,” Kinney said.

Father Virgil Trott is played by Scot Schwark, who served as musical director on “Damn Yankees,” the first Summerset play of the season.

Les Mahla, musical director for “Jamboree,” worked on “Nunsense I” and “Nunsense II” in 1990 and 1992.

“It’s just hilarious,” he said of the latest installment. “You will laugh more in two hours here than in two months. The actors and actresses do a magnificent job portraying their characters.”

“Nunsense Jamboree” will literally include everyone in the fun, with lots of audience participation. Warning: Don’t think sitting in the back row will save you.

“You’re not safe anywhere,” Schwark said.

“I think it would be entertaining for the whole family,” Nelson said.

“Sister Amnesia’s Country Western Nunsense Jamboree” plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at Frank W. Bridges Theatre, Riverland Community College, Austin. Tickets are $14 and $10 for students 16 and under. Tickets can be purchased at Coffee House on Main and the Riverland Box Office, 433-0595.
