Bike race attracts 103

About 20 more people cycled their way through Mower County during the 25-Mile Dan Ulwelling Bike Race Sunday than a year ago, organizers said.

Roughly 103 bicyclists, one unicyclist and one inline skater registered for the race, which starts at the entrance of the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center.

Although the previous two days of the Fourth of July weekend were overcast with intermittent rain, the skies were blue and a tailwind coasted the bicyclists to the finish line Sunday.

Race organizer Terry Fox said pre-registration is usually very low — about 15 people this year — because bicyclists often register the day of an event in case of poor weather conditions.

The race brings many people from out of the area — one bicyclist was even from Salt Lake City. About 30 people from Owatonna and at least 15 from the Twin Cities area raced this year.

The race is non-sanctioned and utilizes chip timing. Organizers estimated the race has been running for more than 20 years.

Trophies were awarded to the top overall male and female.

The top three male and female finishers in several age groups received ribbons.
