Water levels begin to recede

Water levels have been receding around Austin, but the city has taken steps to be prepared if flooding occurs as a result of Wednesday’s tornado and more possible storms this week.

City engineer Jon Erichson said a Thursday flood “pre-meeting” was held to make sure everyone is on the same page in case of a flood. Such meetings are held anytime there is a potential for flooding.

Also, barricades and sand bags have been readied and can be deployed if necessary, Erichson said.

The city is “cautiously optimistic” that it won’t be affected by flooding, Erichson said.

That cautious optimism is supported by current water levels — Erichson said both Dobbins Creek and the Cedar River at Lansing are down by more than a foot and a half.

The Cedar in Lansing, near County Road 2, is the only recorded spot currently “near flood stage,” Erichson said.

It was at 14.91 feet as of Friday.

Police chief Paul Philipp said no roads have been closed as the city does preliminary flood planning. He said roads only close when water begins to flow onto them, creating dangerous driving conditions.
