Seat belt law to kick in

The Minnesota primary seat belt law kicks in Tuesday, meaning drivers can be pulled over simply for not buckling up.

Previously, law enforcement had to have another reason for pulling a motorist over before issuing a seat belt ticket. Austin police chief Paul Philipp said the new law was long overdue.

“I’m pleased that it passed,” he said. “It makes sense to me and I think it’ll save lives.”

The law narrowly passed the Legislature in May and was signed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
