Austin residents are advised to be aware of potential scammers claiming to be roofworkers in the tornado aftermath, the police chief said Friday.

Chief Paul Philipp said the department received a call from an elderly woman who said a man claiming to be a roofworker entered her home and nosed around.

The woman became nervous and asked the man to leave.

Philipp said he has heard of similar cases but has not heard additional police calls.

The chief said roofworkers need to register with City Hall and receive proper paperwork.

He said residents should request to see that paperwork and should not let people in their homes otherwise.
