COON RAPIDS — Things didn’t go exactly as planned for Austin’s Drew Osier on the first day of the Class ‘AAA’ state golf meet in Coon Rapids Tuesday.
Still, they could’ve been much worse as the senior finished with a score of 78, which tied him for 22nd place overall with 11 other golfers. Joe Petrulo of Apple Valley had the top score on the first day with a 71.
Osier missed a couple of putts for birdie on the day and finished with six bogeys and 12 PARs. It was a frustrating day for the senior who was hoping to be near the top of the field.
“I expect way too much of myself sometimes and I don’t just go out and swing free and let it happen,” Osier said. “It was tough and I kind of let it eat at me. Normally I’m not like that, but today for some reason it got under my skin and compounded itself into worse shots.”
Osier missed a few drives, but most of his troubles came in his short game. He three-putted two holes and had to chip from the trees and the bunker a few times.
“He showed his emotions a little bit today, which we don’t like to see,” Austin head coach Will Pazurek said. “But he calmed himself back down. He maybe put a little too much pressure on himself.”
Osier is not worried about the pressure as he will play the final round Wednesday beginning at 8:06 a.m.
“I’m still in the hunt for the top 10 or 15,” said Osier, who shot a 39 on the front and back nine. “It’ll be the last round of my high school career so the pressure will be off.”
