The newly appointed executive director of Austin’s Welcome Center has resigned, effective June 4.

Victoria Salas, who was hired by the center about a month ago, announced her decision at a Thursday board meeting. Communications director RoseMary Aase will fill the position in the interim, according to a board press release.

Board president Mark Stevens said Salas’ decision came unexpectedly. He said she did not give an indication as to why she was leaving the post.

The Welcome Center was formed in 2000 to help new residents of varying nationalities get comfortable in Austin. According to its Web site, the center has an 11-member board and a four-member staff.

Stevens said the board will now conduct a nationwide search to find a new director.

He said a good candidate will have strong communication skills, non-profit experience and business savvy. Being bilingual would also be a plus, Stevens said.

Aase declined to comment for this story.
