The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) recently received additional funding to add another eight member positions for its AmeriCorps (AC) LEAP Initiative. The new grant totals nearly $246,000 and was awarded by the Corporation for National and Community Service as part of the nation’s economic stimulus program.
A total of 28 AmeriCorps members will now serve in Southern Minnesota, beginning in late August through July 2010. The AmeriCorps-LEAP (Learning Early Achieves Potential) Initiative seeks to advance the social and emotional well-being of Minnesota’s youngest children, giving them a healthy head start for kindergarten.
“We are thrilled to be selected for the additional funding and eager to start getting things done,” said Tim Penny, SMIF president and CEO. “In this time of economic hardship, service and volunteering is more important than ever. These AmeriCorps members and the volunteers they mobilize will help us expand our reach and impact on the lives of young children and their families.”
Often referred to as the “domestic Peace Corps,” AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs in education, the environment, public safety, and other areas. As part of its efforts to help young children succeed, AC/LEAP members serve in Early Childhood programs, learning centers or schools across the 20-county region. One member summed up her AC service by noting that it helped her find a new career and a strong commitment to helping children discover the world around them.
SMIF is now actively recruiting AmeriCorps members for regional service, and applicants can choose from a variety of positions. Benefits include a living allowance, health care, training and career skills, and an education award worth up to $4,725 to pay for college or to pay off student loans.
