Mary Hardwick Scripps, 61
Mary Hardwick Scripps, 61, formerly of Austin, lost her long battle with cancer and died in Brooklyn, N.Y. on May 27, 2009.
Mary, the daughter of Robert and Irene Hardwick, was born in Minneapolis on Oct. 13, 1947. She grew up in Austin, and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1965. After attending the College of St. Catherine and the University of Minnesota, Mary started her own successful jewelry manufacturing company, Haywire. Her interest in and dedication to jewelry design remained with her throughout her life. Most recently, Mary made her homes in Thompson, Conn. and St. John USVI.
A witty and generous hostess, Mary was also a passionate, consummate gardener. She loved literature and art, amusing conversation and liberal politics. She was a benefactor of many charities, notably among them the Pomfret School in Pomfret, Conn., from which her two sons graduated.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Rachel Vaughn, Big Sky, Mont.; two sons, Welland Hardwick Scripps and Samuel David Scripps, Brooklyn, N.Y.; her grandsons, Seasal and Trewyn Vaughn, Big Sky; sister, Patricia (Don) Sterling, Gunnison, Colo.; brothers, David (Kathy) Hardwick, E. Woodstock, Conn. and Paul Hardwick, Cedaredge, Colo.; and her former husband, Sebastian Scripps, Dayville, Conn.
Mary is deeply loved and missed by her family and many friends. A memorial service and celebration of her life is scheduled for this October in Pomfret, Conn.
