Two Hayfield athletes placed in the top-eight at the Class ‘A’ state track and field meet in Hamline University in St. Paul Saturday.

Kiley Severson, a junior, took third in the shot put with a career-best throw of 39 feet, 3.5 inches. Severson’s throw was just .25 inches short of tying for second.

Becci Osterdyk of Mora won the event with a throw of 40-2.5.

Hayfield senior sprinter Dennis Gilbertson took seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.53 seconds.

Gilbertson battled the rain in his race, but was pleased with how he responded.

“I just felt like I had a place to move up a little bit and I guess I did that,” he said. “The weather wasn’t great but it was better than what it could have been.”

Making it to state was sweet redemption for Gilbertson, who sat out last season after tearing both of his hamstrings.

“That was my entire goal this year was to get to state. I didn’t care how I did it, I just wanted to get back here for my last year,” he said. “It was good competition, something I haven’t seen in a while and I thought I did pretty well.”

Cameron Boy of Jordan won the race with a time of 22.25 seconds.
