Austin business doesn’t, then does, get liquor license

The Austin City Council said “no” to Club Kache’s liquor license request Monday night. At least for a few minutes.
A 3-2 vote against approval for the 319 Main St. N business was followed by further deliberation, the city attorney’s advice on the matter and, ultimately, a 4-1 vote to approve.
The council originally voted the license down when some members voiced concerns that not enough was known about the business — the board was told the place would sell beer and, to the amusement of many in the room, operate as a bakery.
However, city attorney David Hoversten reminded the board that liquor licensing is to be done strictly by set standards rather than the board’s opinion of the business. The club’s owner, Sandra Byers, met the standards, which includes a criminal history check.
Marian Clennon from Ward 3 voted against the license both times. She said after the meeting that she understands how licensing works but doesn’t like the idea of “rubber stamping” something.
