Groundbreaking on an expansion to The Arc of Mower County is scheduled for July 20.

The Arc, which provides services to intellectually disabled people and their families, will be getting a new 4,600 square-foot home at their 400 Third Ave. N.E. location. The expansion will be attached to the east side of the Mower County Senior Center building.

The expansion is budgeted at approximately $600,000, with most of that funding coming from a Hormel Foundation donation.

The new space will have offices, a library, a computer lab, a snack area and a commons area.

Bigger Arc events will be held in the adjacent seniors building, executive director Sara Schafer said.

A wish list for the new building is on The Arc’s Web site and includes items such as a pool table, plastic chairs, gift cards and computers.

The building is city property, Schafer said, so bids on construction will have to go through city council. Paul Johnson Architects are working on the project as well.

The project is projected to take two months, though Schafer said she expects it to take a little longer.
