A straight and steady approach helped an Austin golfer notch a medal at a Big Nine Triangular in Austin Country Club Tuesday.
James Thorson, an Austin senior, hit 15 Pars on his way to a score of 75, which saw him lead the field and lead Austin to a first place finish in the three team triangular.
“I didn’t really have any holes that stuck out,” Thorson said. “There were a lot of birdie chances I missed.”
Austin scored 312 as a team, while John Marshall had a 342 and Owatonna shot a 352.
Thorson was unfazed by a one-hour rain delay while he was on hole No. 11. The delay saw the match finish up just before sundown.
“We just sat in the club house. It wasn’t too bad,” Thorson said.
For Austin senior Drew Osier, the delay was a blessing. Osier came out after the break and shot one under par in the last eight holes to score a 79 and finish tied for second on the day.
He had double bogeyed hole No. 2 and triple bogeyed hole No. 10.
“For me (the break) was probably the best thing that could’ve happened because my first 10 holes were pretty bad,” Osier said. “I cleared my head a little bit and focused on what I really needed to do in the last eight holes.”
All six of Austin’s golfers have shot below 80 at least one time this season and that gives the team a strong edge.
“Our team has a lot of depth and a lot of people can score for us,” Thorson said. “Out of our six guys, we can use any four of their scores and that’s good.”
Osier said that makes life easier for all of the Packers on the greens.
“It takes the pressure off everyone,” he said. “You know no matter what you shoot, your teammates are gonna have a good score.”
Austin head coach Will Pazurek said the Packers’ best score is still ahead of them.
“We could get a couple of guys down into the low 70s and break par,” he said. “I’m loking forward to see what our lowest score would be, because we haven’t done it yet. I think we will see it soon.”
Austin scores: Thorson, 75; Osier, 79; Nick Tabor, 80; Luke Hoefflin, 82; Drake Brehmer, 82 Garrett Erstad, 88
