The Riverland softball team is heading to the Regional Tournament.

After pulling off two wins in the consolation bracket at the MCAC State tournament, Riverland earned a trip to the Region 13A Tournament by becoming one of the top two finishing MCAC South teams at state.

RCC can finish no worse than fourth at state after beating Fon Du Lac 5-4, and upsetting Ridgewater 5-3 in St. Cloud Friday. The Blue Devils (16-14 overall) lost to Northridge 7-4 in the opener.

RCC hadn’t beaten Ridgewater in its last 12 tries but it did so in dramatic fashion on Friday.

Laura Meyer, who has now hit safely in 29 straight games, and Thenedra Corey hit back-to-back two-out, run scoring singles to cap a four-run sixth inning that saw the Blue Devils take a 5-3 lead for good.

“It really was a fun day and we had so many stars,” RCC head coach Dave Lillemon said. “The bottom line is our defense and pitching was the difference.”

Pacelli grad Carmen Smith knocked in two runs in the first and one fifth inning of the 5-4 win over Fon Du Lac.

RCC left 12 runners in scoring position in the opener.

The Blue Devils will play open Region play Saturday in Rochester.
