It’s a lot more than a day off

For some, Memorial Day has no special meaning except for a chance to plan a barbecue or a family vacation.
While it’s nice to have a long weekend, it’s also important we remember why we have the day off in the first place.
Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died serving our country.
It was originally proclaimed in 1868 and was first observed on May 30 that same year.
In Mower County, several Memorial Day services are planned today.
Events include a service at the Mower County Courthouse at 8:05 a.m. for a program at the Veterans Memorial, a presentation at the Oakwood Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. and a tribute to those buried at sea, held at the Horace Austin State Park Bridge at 10:05 a.m., to name a few.
Austin and Mower County has its share of brave men and women who have died while serving our country and who are currently serving as well. We are very proud of all of them, and commend the members of our local VFWs, who work hard all-year long to make sure our soldiers and veterans are remembered.
