George L. Grovdahl, 67
George Leslie Grovdahl, 67, of Stewartville, Minn., died on May 12, after a courageous battle with cancer at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minn.
George was born Dec. 24, 1941 in Rochester, Minn. to George and Erma (Stayner) Grovdahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Evanger Lutheran Church where he was a life-long member. He attended District 91 and Hayfield High School, and he farmed with his father on the family farm that his great-grandfather founded. George served in the U.S. Army in 1964 and 1965, and returned to work on the family farm. He left farming in 1988 to work as a custodian for the Rochester School District at Harry Bishop and Pinewood schools. George was united in Marriage to Doris Marie Dick on Sept. 19, 1992 in Stewartville, where they have made their home. Doris is employed at Ability Building Center in Rochester and George had retired in October of 2007 due to health problems. He was a past active member of the Hayfield American Legion, where he sang in its choir. After moving to Stewartville he became a member of its American Legion. George and Doris enjoyed dancing, country music and going to Branson, Mo. They also enjoyed tractor pulls, antique tractor shows, flea markets and he collected Oliver toy tractors. George was a loving husband, son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.
George will be sadly missed by his wife, Doris; sister, Jan (Don) Flatness, Glenville, Minn.; nephews, Jon (Sari) Flatness, Savage, Minn. and Mike Sween of Racine, Minn.; niece, Janean (Joe), Ryan, Tommy and Anna Mestnik, Prior Lake, Minn.; mother-in-law, Mildred Dick, Wabasha, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Rita (Mark) Schmitt, Rogers, Minn.; Mary (Bob) Press, Pinckney, Mich., brothers-in- law, Randy (Jane) Dick, St. Charles, Minn., Jerry (Patty) and Dale (Jeanne Dick, Millville, Minn., Pete (Janet) Dick, Windsor, Colo.; Don Sween, Racine and aunts, uncles, many cousins, special friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George in 2005 and Erma in 2007; sister, Nellie Ann Sween in 2002 and his father-in-law, John Dick in 2005.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on May 16, at Evanger Lutheran Church in rural Sargeant, with the Reverends Lissa Kahl and Lyle Aadahl officiating. Burial with military graveside honors by the Stewartville American Legion will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Evanger Lutheran Church or Seasons Hospice. Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville is in charge of arrangements.
