A male subject was arrested Wednesday night following a high speed chase after the subject stole an Austin Police Department squad car.

The incident began when Mower County deputies responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at 57886 105th St., Lyle. According to Austin police reports, the subject, age 27, allegedly threatened a family member by brandishing a knife and then fled on a bicycle.

Deputies set up a perimeter and called Austin police for the K-9 unit for a track. The track included an area of roughly one and three-quarters mile starting at around 10484 565th Ave. About 35 minutes into the track an unfamiliar voice came over the police radio asking what their intentions were should the subject be apprehended. It was then figured out that the call came from the K-9 unit and a GPS signal from the car showed it to be in motion, southbound on 565th Avenue.

Mower County deputies located the vehicle, but the subject failed to stop and instead accelerated. Speeds during the chase reached 120 miles per hour.

The chase eventually reached Highway 218 into Iowa where Iowa Highway Patrol were setting up stop sticks outside of St. Ansgar, Iowa. The subject, however, jammed on the breaks, coming to a stop in the driving lane.

A deputy tried to avoid the vehicle, but ended up striking it, causing small damage to both vehicles. The subject then reversed course and began northbound on Highway 218. The subject got into Lyle where it turned west onto County Road 6, then south on Highway 105 and east again on State Line Road, eventually making it to County Road S70 again in Iowa.

The subject then called Austin dispatch and arranged to turn himself in at the Northwood, Iowa Fire Department where deputies took him into custody and handed him over to Northwood Police. Austin Police are currently investigating how the subject managed to get into the car.

The subject faces charges including second degree assault, motor vehicle theft, felony flee in a motor vehicle and theft of firearm due to the firearms in the squad car at the time of the theft.

Iowa is also looking into charges of their own. The subject is currently in the Worth County Jail in Iowa.
