An Austin man has been charged with forgery after police were dispatched to a report of people opening mailboxes.
Jose Silva-Mercado, 25, faces two counts of felony aggravated forgery.
According to the complaint, an officer was dispatched May 24 to 14th Street Northeast on a report of three males walking southbound and opening mailboxes.
When the officer arrived, the defendant identified himself as Andrew Joseph Martinez Keller. The males admitted to “touching” the mailboxes but not opening them, records show. The officer also detected the smell of alcohol on the men.
The officer learned that Martinez Keller had multiple tattoos; the defendant did not. Martinez Keller was also wanted on a warrant out of Texas. The defendant claimed he used the name for work, and showed the officer a Missouri I.D.; a Social Security card was found after his arrest.
The complaint states the defendant was born in Mexico and had been living with an aunt in the United States for three weeks. According to records, he was convicted of aggravated forgery in the U.S. in 2007 and has been deported multiple times.
Silva-Mercado is scheduled for arraignment in Mower County District Court June 4.
