Ten fourth and fifth grade students at Banfield Elementary School will be attending the Young Authors and Young Artists (YAYA) Conference May 21.
Students could voluntarily submit samples of their writing and artwork to a Banfield team, who evaluated the submissions and chose 10 to attend. The YAYA annual conference hosts more than 800 students from public and private schools across southeast Minnesota.
The school district pays for the students to go to the conference, where they will receive tips from artists, writers, journalists, lyricists, illustrators and other professionals.
Six students will be attending from grade 4: Tucker Nelson, Ave Brogan, Autumn Beske, Sydney Conway, Miranda Bergemann and Samantha Smith. Four fifth-graders will be going: Jason Stouil, Baylee Garroway, Bailee Brooks and Jennifer Bogle.
According to the Southeast Service Cooperative, who sponsors the YAYA Conference, students are “encouraged to have fun with their creativeness and uniqueness. This program makes a significant impact on children whose writing interests range from mild avid and diverse and exposes students to the art and joy of writing.”
