Vikings drop two to La Crescent

An ill-timed line drive put a kink in the Hayfield baseball team’s plans as they lost both games of a doubleheader at La Crescent by scores of 8-2 and 9-4.
Things couldn’t have started much worse for the Vikings (2-3 overall) as Tyler Krekling, their ace, was hit by a line drive on the very first at-bat of the first game. Krekling immediately left the game after being hit in the shoulder and his status is unknown.
“It was one of those plays where you blink after hearing the bat and you look up and he’s down,” Hayfield head coach Craig Selk said. “He’s our stud and we came in ready to roll, but that wasn’t pretty to see.”
With Krekling’s injury, Hayfield had to adjust it’s defense for both games and the result was a more than a few errors.
“We’ve only got 13 guys, so when one person goes down it disrupts the whole ship,” Selk said. “We had some outfielders playing infield.”
Evan Bungum took the loss in the first game, allowing three hits, four walks and six runs in five innings.
Tyler Nelson was 2-for-3, and Travis Kaufman had a double.
In the second game, Jake Holst took the loss as he went two innings, allowing three hits and seven runs.
Bungum was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in that game.
