Resource Fair this Tuesday

The Mower County Community Transition Interagency Committee (CTIC) and Riverland Community College are hosting the second annual On Target for Transition Resource Fair this Tuesday.
The fair is an event for Austin and other area school district students with disabilities to become familiar with potential opportunities available after they are done with high school. “Transition” refers to the process where students begin to address and make plans for their post secondary lives.
Brandon Yoney, special education teacher at Ellis Middle School and CTIC chairman, said the purpose of the resource fair is to show there are several colleges that offer programs catering to students with disabilities.
“A typical four-year university may not be the best option,” Yoney said. “There are a number of colleges throughout the state that have programs for kids with disabilities.”
The fair targets area juniors, seniors and transition students (up to age 21).
In addition to RCC, this year’s fair will feature college representatives from the Minnesota Life College and the University of Iowa REACH (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) program — both geared for students with disabilities. Other topics covered will include “What Makes a Good Employee” by Mike May, manager of store operations at Hy-Vee, and Vocational Rehab Services.
Yoney said about 30 students and their parents attended last year; they expect about 70 at the fair on Tuesday.
“We certainly want as many people to see this as possible,” he said.
Yoney said RCC plans to videotape the sessions and post them online.
