After going hitless in their last outing, the Packer bats were silenced again as they mustered just four hits in two losses to Mayo in a softball game at Todd Park Tuesday.

The Spartans (5-2 overall, 5-2 Big Nine) took the first game 5-0 and won the nightcap 11-0.

Austin (2-5 overall, 2-5 Big Nine) had a big opportunity in the first inning of the first game after Sara Alms and Sara Sundberg each singled. But the next two Packers grounded out to end the threat.

Austin also left runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth when Brandi Ruroden lined out to Mayo shortstop Sarah Bohlen for the third out.

“If we get a couple of key hits, we would’ve picked up our confidence level,” Austin head coach Steve Knox said. “We expect more out of our hitters than that. We’re been very confident in what we’ve seen out of them so far. But we’ll have to go back to the drawing board and work even harder on what we can accomplish.”

Mayo took the lead for good in the second inning when Emily Jasperson had an RBI-double and Courtney Palmer had a run scoring single.

The Spartans took over the second game in the fourth when they racked up five hits while taking advantage of two Austin errors in the frame to score four times to take a 6-0 lead.

Freshman Marie Clennon pitched both games for Austin.

“She faced some good hitters tonight and Mayo did a good job of hitting the ball and adjusting to the pitches that were thrown to them,” Knox said. “For a ninth grader to come out and pitch both games of a doubleheader, that’s huge.”
