A cause is still sought for a fire that caused extensive damage in a house late Monday night.

According to the Mower County Sheriff’s Office, LeRoy firefighters were called to the house, 211 Luella St., after neighbors reported seeing flames coming from upstairs on the east side of the house.

The home was recently purchased by Jeffrey Harden, 42, of Lime Springs, Iowa, for himself and his mother, Hazel Harden, 64, of Rochester, and was in the process of being remodeled.

According to police reports, Harden was in the process of remodeling the house and he and a friend were hanging sheetrock upstairs. Harden said there was no electricity upstairs, which had received new wiring, and that they were running electricity through extension cords from downstairs.

Harden said the two left at around 4:30 p.m. that day and nobody was in the home at the time of the fire.

The State Fire Marshal was expected to investigate the scene yet today.

Nobody was injured and the home was insured.
